NOUS Spotlight Wide Beam, October 20, 2021 – Chandran Kukathas, Margaret Moore and Clemens Schneider: Immigration and freedom

20. October 2021 @ 15:00 - 16:30 CEST

Together with our two speakers, Chandran Kukathas (Singapore) and Margaret Moore (Kingston, Canada), and guided by Clemens Schneider (Berlin, Germany), we will explore what the idea of freedom might mean for immigration. Questions to be tackled may be, for example, whether, from a classical liberal point of view, a robust philosophical argument can be made for border controls and limiting immigration. Beyond the idea of an individual “right to move”, can we imagine, on the contrary, a nation’s “right to exclude”? What is a nation in the first place? Where do we draw the line, i.e. how can we, if at all, differentiate between insiders and outsiders, i.e. between natives/nationals and the rest? What does experience tell us about the side-effects if we do that? How could a pragmatic approach to immigration avoid the trap of identity politics? Does the individual motive for migration matter at all, and if so, in which way? The discussion will be inspired by Chandran’s new book (Immigration and Freedom, Princeton University Press 2021).

Tune in and discuss with us! To obtain the Zoom link, please register here until October 19, 2021: nous.spotlight@gmail.com.
