NOUS

Who we are

In ancient Greek, “nous” means mind, intellect, or reason. NOUS is an international community for interdisciplinary research. The network links all academic fields relevant for thinking about social order and liberty. It spans philosophy, politics, economics, sociology, history, and much more. It fosters scholarly research, contact and exchange, and it aims to promote talent.

NOUS contributes to widening the perspectives of the different academic disciplines in such a way that they will encompass the important questions of our times. We give interdisciplinary research a boost. We show the academic youth the great advantages of using a wide variety of theoretical instruments. We reach out and enable a debate about the findings from different fields.

What we do

NOUS Spotlight

NOUS Spotlight is an ongoing series of brief, focused Zoom meetings for scholarly discussion. It takes place every last Tuesday of the month via Zoom. In each meeting, a member of the NOUS network puts up for discussion some piece or aspect of his or her work. Check out the upcoming dates and topics under “Events”.

NOUS Wide Beam

NOUS Spotlight Wide Beam events are part of the greater NOUS Spotlight family. Here we address important, potentially controversial topics in a moderated discussion between two experts and the audience. These events are open to the public. We currently organize Wide Beam events two or three times per year.

NOUS Projects

NOUS carries out a number of academic projects, ranging from scholarly workshops and conferences including the publication of specifically commissioned papers in relevant peer-reviewed academic journals to the translation of important, but so far neglected scholarly works. Watch out for our events and calls for papers.

Scholar's Corner

Scholar’s corner, our academic discussion group, brings together advanced students and Ph.D. candidates. The time of a weekend, based on a set of academic readings, different themes are discussed – ranging from, e.g., Adam Smith and his view of man to Max Weber and the multidimensionality of the social sciences.

Writer's Corner

Writer’s corner, our journalistic discussion group, brings together reporters, editors, bloggers and other authors. The time of a weekend, based on a set of academic as well as lighter reading materials, different themes are discussed – ranging from, e.g., freedom of speech to immigration policy and to the “blind spots” of liberalism.

Agora Summer Academy

Agora is a week-long summer academy for pupils and first-year students. In lectures, discussions and excursions, participants get an introduction to important and fascinating approaches from philosophy, economics and politics. Check out the Agora website for further information: http://agora-akademie.de/.

How to support NOUS

Our academic network is entirely independent. We rely on the voluntary contributions of those who are interested in our work.
